WordPress Security through htaccess

On 04-03-2013 articles, code, wordpress

There are quite a few plugins for enhancing your WordPress site from getting hacked via the login page.

Over the years I have used limit login attempts plugin for blocking IP addresses that get your login credientials wrong in certain number of tries. This works well for bruteforce attacks.  And the settings are very customizable as far as the tightness of the time frame someone gets blocked.

Other methods involve moving your login and admin to  a different directory. I believe there is a plugin for that, the manual way of implementing this is a pain. A simpler way is to block all IP address except your own from accessing the login page. This method is ideal from someone who only blogs or edits their site from an office or home computer. Not the best method if you are a traveling blogger. None the less, probably the most secure method out there and simple to implement.

Just paste this code into your htaccess file, change the “allow from” with your IP address and you are good to go. Make sure you add a 403 redirect to either your homepage, or a custom 403 file. 403 is the access denied error that gets triggered when someone blocked is trying to access your login page. Ive found by default it times out in an infinite loop, but probably depends on your hosting company and how they handle 403 errors.

<Files wp-login.php>
order deny,allow
    deny from all
    allow from 00.000.00.000
</Files>

ErrorDocument 403 http://www.redirecturl.com/

Blocking other sensitive files

<files readme.html>
 Order allow,deny
 Deny from all
</files>

<files readme.txt>
 Order allow,deny
 Deny from all
</files>

<files install.php>
 Order allow,deny
 Deny from all
</files>

<files .htaccess>
 order allow,deny
 deny from all
</files>

<files wp-config.php>
 order allow,deny
 deny from all
</files>

Now let’s protect the wp-includes folder so if someone is trying to access those files in the url.

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^wp-admin/includes/ - [F,L]
RewriteRule !^wp-includes/ - [S=3]
RewriteRule ^wp-includes/[^/]+\.php$ - [F,L]
RewriteRule ^wp-includes/js/tinymce/langs/.+\.php - [F,L]
RewriteRule ^wp-includes/theme-compat/ - [F,L]
</IfModule>

Block know hackers and hack bots that scan your site.

Comments

  1. This can be a very effective way to protect your Joomla! administrator directory. Any other directory in public_html can be protected in the same way. This method only works if you have a static IP address assigned to you. Anyone attempting to browse such directories using a different IP Address will get a 403 Forbidden error.

  2. Take a look at http://support.hostgator.com/articles/getting-started/general-help/apache-mod_rewrite-and-examples Use the last example for “Block traffic from multiple referrers”.

  3. This method will allow anyone to view all website files except for .html, .htm, .txt, .jpg, .jpeg files. Anyone with the IP address 192.168.0.100 will be able to view the all website content since this IP address is on the allow list. Go to WhatIsMyIP.com to find out the IP address of your home’s Internet connection. Enter your IP address in place of the 192.168.0.100 IP address. Please also note that your home IP address may change in the future and you might have to update the .htaccess file before you will be able to view the site again.

  4. my script alias pointed to folder that did not exist. that was my issue and was getting 403. so check your paths!
